Itanagar. At least 88 students of a girls’ school in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh were allegedly forced to undress by three teachers as a punishment for writing “vulgar” words against the headmaster of the school.

The teachers – Thinley Wangmu Thongdok, Sangeeta Khalkho and Nabam Janu – allegedly forced 14 of the students of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya to be fully naked. The rest of the students were allegedly asked to remove their clothes partially. All the girls are studying in Class 6 and Class 7.

The humiliating incident took place on November 23 but the matter came to light on November 27. The students had been warned by the teachers not to disclose the matter to anyone.

After the students informed about the incident to the All Sagalee Students Union (ASSU), an FIR was lodged with the local police station. Papum Pare district superintendent of police Tumme Amo said that as the matter was related to girls it had been referred to the women police station in Itanagar.

The Arunachal Congress condemned the “heinous act” and demanded strong action against the teachers involved in it.

The students also disclosed to an inquiry team of ASSU that some of the teachers’ friends disturbed the atmosphere of the school by playing loud music during classes and consuming alcohol during night hours in the school premises. The students repeatedly dropped their complaints addressed to the chairman of the school in the complain box several times, but the teachers allegedly removed them from the complaint box, they alleged.

This is not the first incident of girl students being humiliated in school. In Madhya Pradesh, recently a girl studying in Class 10 was forced to strip by a teacher on the pretext of body search after a classmate lost Rs.70.
