New Delhi. One of the world’s most popular web browser, UC Browser, has mysteriously disappeared from the Google Play Store. The app has vanished just days after it claimed crossing 500 million downloads on Google Play store. Incidentally, the lightweight version of the browser, UC Mini, is still available for download on the Play Store. UC Browser is developed by UCWeb, which is owned by China’s Alibaba Group.
The browser’s dissappearnce from the Google Play Store was first reported by some users on Reddit India. So far, there is no official information on the app’s disappearance from Google Play Store.
However, a reportclaims that Google took the step shortly after the UC Browser app came under the Indian government’s scanner for allegedly sending data to remote servers in China. “It was said that the application could access user data even after its removal from the phone,” says the report.
The news report further adds that Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Hyderabad is looking into the matter.
In August too, the UC Browser had come under the government’s scanner for alleged leak of mobile data of its Indian users. A senior IT ministry official had then told news agency that it may face ban in the country if found guilty.
“There have been complaints against UC Browser that it sends mobile data of its users in India to server in China. There are complaints that even if an user has uninstalled it or cleaned browsing data, the browser retains control of DNS of user’s device,”
The browser, however, so far is still available for download on Apple’s App Store..
According to the Internet Trends Report 2017 by Kleiner Perkins, released in June this year, UC Browser is India’s leading mobile internet browser with 50% market share followed by Google’s Crome and Opera browser. The report also ranked the UC Browser as the sixth most-downloaded application on Android platform in India.
UC Browser has last year claimed that it has over 100 million monthly active users in India and Indonesia.Last month, UCWeb, part of Alibaba Mobile Business group, launched its innovative mobile marketing platform, UC Ads in India.
